Emotional Intelligence is Fundamental in Arts Education

Music and arts education in general is a means to not only entertain, but also to convey the plight of struggles with self, others and society. The arts unite people and provide channels for expressing ideas and sentiment. Moreover, the disciplines within arts education involve regular practice to improve skills which helps students with self-control and perseverance. Some sources also point out that arts education helps facilitate diversity as well.

What’s up with Common Core?

Most U.S. states signed on to the Common Core State Standards Initiative when it was rolled out in 2010. Over time, more than 20 states eventually repealed, revised, or rolled back parts of the program. Nine states as well as Puerto Rico are now non-adopters. At this point, it’s hard to tell which states are Common Core states, which states repealed Common Core, or which states might have “rebranded” their standards (but they still look a lot like Common Core).

Studies have found that students will listen to podcasts longer than they read, while also retaining more information.
