March 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Everyone,

As publishing consultants, we have the great privilege of reviewing an enormous amount of content. With this birds-eye view we are seeing how the video format has expanded exponentially in the past few years. It makes sense; after all, we know that students are avid (obsessive?) YouTube watchers and the video format comes second nature to them. But how can publishers make sure that their educational videos are effective in the classroom? How do you assign the right keywords in order to help teachers discover the perfect video for that day's lessons? How do you glean the concepts out of each video? After all, each video can be 5 minutes, 10 minutes or 60 minutes. And a video can be about multiple subjects (ELA, Social Studies, etc.). Check out our blog article on the MDR School of Thought site to learn more about how EdGate is optimizing publisher content by assigning keywords, concepts, standards, and metadata so that video curriculum is "Teacher-Ready."

As always, EdGate is your source for staying current with new developments in education and the impact of educational standards.

Research indicates that the adoption of new textbooks, specifically math textbooks, are not showing there is a direct impact on improvement in student learning. The research suggests that one factor may be a lack of proper training sessions for the teachers in how to best utilize the textbooks. Additionally it is suggested that teachers may be using supplemental materials that indeed help students meet expectations.  If you find that your textbooks and content are not making the grade, your company might benefit from EdGate’s services which include Alignment Services ranging the spectrum from Hands-Off to High-Touch. Alignments at the lesson level to each applicable standard can demonstrate where educators can best implement sections of the textbook to their fullest potential.  Furthermore, EdGate offers a Gap Analysis service that will identify the gaps in alignments to standards in both states that adopted Common Core, as well as those states that did not adopt Common Core. Additionally, if you find that your company could benefit from supplemental material to cover gaps, EdGate’s Curriculum Matrix is a repository of tens of thousands of curriculum resources aligned to state standards that can be licensed to complement your curricular content. If your company needs assistance in aligning content to educational standards, evaluating gaps, or in need of aligned supplemental material, please contact our Account Executives for more information.

EdGate Services

Many publishers in the EdTech industry are being inundated with requests for standards-aligned lessons from educators who use their products and content daily in their classrooms. Educators want a “one-stop shop” where they can find easy-to-use lessons and materials. According to Matthew Lynch of The Tech Edvocate, “Every company must offer a variety of lesson plans for teachers to choose from on each standard. There should be engaging videos, written documents, short assessments, and other activities that can help teachers to further engage their students”.  The task of writing lessons is a daunting endeavor requiring research and time in order to produce meaningful standards-aligned lessons. Fortunately, EdGate is staffed with a team of educators with a combined 200 years of teaching experience, who are able to fill this educational need. We have created lesson plans focused on the traditional four core subjects as well as technology lessons involving robotics and coding. Publishers work with EdGate to advance their product in a competitive market. Find out more about EdGate’s lesson writing services here.
